BFF Chief rubbishes 'nepotism' charges

Dhaka, Feb 15 (worldsport7.blogspot.com) – Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin has refuted allegations of running office in breach of laws, made in an anonymous letter to game's global governing body FIFA.

FIFA development officer Monilal Fernando forwarded the two-page letter to the BFF on Feb. 11 after it had received the so-called complaint a few days back.

"I will take up the issue with the BFF executive committee which will decide whether it should be investigated," Salahuddin told a crowed press briefing at the BFF House on Sunday.

"If the committee decides to investigate, it should investigate two things— whether I am breaching the system, and the identity of the person who made the complaint to FIFA," said the legendary footballer.

The complaint said he would make decision all by himself and then put it before others saying that he had made the decision, leaving no room for a vote.

It was alleged that the BFF president favoured his loved and near ones.

The letter referred to the appointment of BFF technical director Shahidhur Rahman Shantoo to cite an instance of 'nepotism'.

"The designation of Technical Director of BFF is a very prestigious and important one and should only be held by a person with extensive knowledge of football, not only domestic but also international."

BFF vice president Kazi Nabil Ahmed defended the appointment and said everything followed procedure.

"The development committee first forwarded the name of the technical director to the executive committee meeting and the meeting having discussed the proposal appointed the technical director," said Nabil, chairman of the BFF development committee.

The complainant asked FIFA to take the issues seriously and do the necessary investigations to put things back in order in the BFF.

The letter also urged FIFA to contact a former BFF president for evidence.

CCS upset Gazi Tank in premier Cricket

Dhaka, Feb 15 (worldsport5.blogspot.com) – Pakistani Shahbuz Butt struck a stroke-filled century to guide Cricket Coaching School to a shock 53-run victory over star-studded Gazi Tank Cricketers in the Premier Division Cricket League at Narayaganj Osmani Stadium on Sunday.

Elsewhere, fifties from Anhoor Newaz and Mehrab Hossain Junior helped Old DOHS beat Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) by 27 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium while Surjo Tarun Club recorded a 91-run win over City Club at the BKSP ground.

CCS vs Gazi Tank

Powered by Shahbuz's superb 156 not out, CCS, who were put in to bat, posted a challenging total of 285-4 in 50 overs.

After opener Elias Sunny (0) was removed off the only fourth delivery, Shahbuz added 92, 99 and 86 runs for the second, third and fourth wicket stands respectively.

Opener Uttam Kumar (37), two-down Shuvagoto Hom (39) and Nizamuddin Ripon (33) gave him good company along the way.

Shahbuz smashed 17 fours and two sixes in his 162-ball sterling knock.

In reply, Mohammad Ashraful's Gazi Tank, who had previously beaten holders Abahani, could manage 232-9 after some tight bowling from Elias Sunny (3/37), Biswanath Halder (2/39) and Nizamuddin (2/46).

Despite the early loss of Imrul Kayes, opener Mithun Chowdhury (45), one-down Anwar Hossain (41) and Indian Pravanjan Mullick (55) gave Gazi Tank a fine start, but the middle order failed to keep the momentum.

Ashraful made a 36-ball 21 before the Bangladesh captain was bowled by Biswanath. Nayeem Islam struck 36 not out but it was not enough to see Gazi Tank in home.

DOHS vs BKSP

Abul Hassan (3/29) and Monir Hossain (3/33) shared six wickets as Old DOHS dismissed BKSP for 178 in 48.5 overs after making 205 in 49.5 overs.

Opting to bat, DOHS were reduced to 15-2 in four overs however Anhoor Newaz and Mehrab Hossain held their nerve contributing 91 for the third wicket.

Both batsmen were eventually run out but not before they completed their respective half-centuries. Newaz made 51 while Mehrab scored exactly 50.

Tail-ender Monir Hossain made a rapid 31 to take DOHS past the 200-run mark.

BKSP's reply fell 28 runs after middle order Mominul Haq scored highest with 37.

Surjo Tarun vs City Club

Chasing Surjo Tarun's 241-9 in 50 overs, City Club were skittled out for 150 in 41.4 overs after Shaklain Sajib, Sabbir Rahman and Sanjamul Islam took two wickets each.

Hannan Sarkar was the most successful Tarun batsman hammering 70 off 95 balls studded with four fours and a six.

Besides, opener Shandeep Sharma (33), Junaed Siddique (31), Rajin Saleh (23) and Sabbir Rahman (21) were the other notable scorers.

City Club opener Rashel Al Mamun contributed 42 while middle order batsmen Serajul Alam Khadem added 24 and Lalmon Hossain 22 respectively.

Aussies Clinch tense Twenty20 win

SYDNEY, Feb 15 (worldsport7.blogspot.com)- Australia earned a thrilling one-run win over New Zealand in the one-off Twenty20 match in Sydney. Set 151 for victory, New Zealand fell just short of their target when Nathan McCullum smashed a four and a six from the final two deliveries of the match. Brendon McCullum (61) top-scored for the tourists, while Nathan Bracken finished with 1-16 from four overs.

David Hussey (41) was the pick of the Australia batsmen, with Daniel Vettori (1-23) outstanding for New Zealand.

The Black Caps had looked on course for victory with the destructive Brendon McCullum at the crease in the penultimate over.

The wicketkeeper put on 71 runs with Neil Broom in an enterprising third-wicket stand before his partner fell for 36 top-edging a James Hopes delivery to Callum Ferguson with the score at 73-3.

However, the complexion of the match changed courtesy a moment of inspiration from Adam Voges when McCullum launched a Ben Hilfenhaus length ball down the ground in the 19th over.

With the ball set to fly for six, long-on fielder Voges made the catch on the boundary, but his body's momentum took him over the rope.

However, just before he crossed the boundary, the Western Australian threw the ball back into play, regaining his composure before sprinting on to the field to complete a quite outstanding catch, a dismissal confirmed by the third umpire Rod Tucker.

Needing 14 from the final over, bowled by Bracken, New Zealand's hopes of victory looked to have ended when Grant Elliott (23) was run out off the first delivery.

The next three went for just two runs, leaving the tourists needing 12 runs to win from the final two balls.

Nathan McCullum promptly slapped them for a four and a six, leaving New Zealand agonisingly short of their winning target.

With Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke or Mike Hussey all absent, Australia stand-in captain Brad Haddin won the toss and elected to bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The wicketkeeper made a flying start alongside David Warner at the top of the innings, racing to 34 inside four overs before he was caught and bowled by Tim Southee.

Warner and Ferguson fell soon after before Hussey steadied the innings with a composed 41 off 39 deliveries, ably assisted by Voges (23), Cameron White and James Hopes (both 16).

Hiddink to Retire after 2010 World Cup

LONDON, Feb 15 (worldsport7.blogspot.com/Reuters) - Russia and Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink has said he plans to retire from football after the 2010 World Cup.

The 62-year-old Dutchman will manage Premier League Chelsea until the end of the season after taking over last week from the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari.

"I think I will quit in the summer of 2010 after the World Cup," Hiddink told the Sunday Mirror.

"From then on I am just going to ride around on my Harley-Davidson and I will be more of an ambassador for Nike."

"And I'll take care, privately, of my own project for the poor in Tanzania," he added.

Hiddink, who watched his new side's 3-1 FA Cup fifth-round victory at Watford on Saturday, said that Champions League qualification was his main priority.

"Chelsea want to qualify for the Champions League. That is the mission I have been given by (owner) Roman Abramovich — it's as simple as that."

"It is a massive challenge, but I think I can handle the task when I look at the quality of the squad."

Abramovich also pays Hiddink's wages as Russia coach and, if the former South Korea and Australia manager's tenure is successful, the Russian billionaire could look to extend the dual management deal.

"You never know. In principle I am supposed to return to the Russian Federation (at the end of this season)," Hiddink said.

"There are a couple of scenarios. I just go back or I do well and we'll see."

Chelsea trail Premier League leaders Manchester United by seven points, which could be extended to 10 if United win their game in hand against Fulham on Wednesday.

Hiddink, who will be based in London for the rest of the season, takes Chelsea to Aston Villa three days later in his first match in charge.

"I will have to be here for about four months. I need to be close to the club—it is a day-to-day job. It will be a big job and certainly not an easy one."

Super Cup to have 4 semis Like UEFA Cup

Dhaka, Feb 14 (worldsport7.blogspot.com) – Bangladesh Football Federation is going to introduce four semifinals in a tournament in the newly-installed Super Cup beginning on March 3. Four semifinals are seen in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup, something Bangladesh football has never seen. The country's football, however, saw the best-of-three finals among popular clubs Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club. The tournament was organised to raise funds for the Sidr-survivors last year. "To make the Super Cup competitive and attractive, we have decided to keep four semifinals in the tournament," said BFF president Kazi Salahuddin, who is immensely influenced by European football. The BFF is going to stage a Tk 2 crore Super Cup with top eight B. League clubs taking part, where the champions will get Tk 1 crore in prize money and the runners-up receive Tk 25 lakh. Salahuddin, himself a legend in Bangladesh football, said Saturday that eight teams, split in two groups, would play each other before top two teams move into the semifinals. He also added that the bottom two teams from each group would play in Plate Cup. The BFF boss also said they would appoint an event management company to make the tournament a success. The game's governing body has also confirmed that four foreign players would be allowed to play for each side and the club could sign up five foreign players. Abahani and Mohammedan were against the idea of playing four foreigners, but others backed it to make the tournament competitive.

Abahani, Biman fly, Mohammedan Crash

Dhaka, Feb 14 (worldsport7.blogspot.com) – Biman Bangladesh Airlines topped the point table with three straight triumphs and holders Abahani Limited returned to winning ways, but title contenders Mohammedan SC went down for the first time in the Premier Division Cricket League on Saturday. An unbeaten fifty from Shakib Al Hasan powered Biman to a convincing seven-wicket win over Partex SC at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan. Pacer Mashrafee Bin Mortaza claimed four scalps to guide Abahani to a 69-run win over Young Pegasus Club at Narayanganj Osmani Stadium. Arman Hossain struck a superb century to propel Victoria SC to an emphatic eight-wicket win over Mohammedan at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Openers Nazmus Sadat and Javed Omar gave the national flag carrier a fine start, contributing 45 runs before Sadat was out for a 19-ball 29. One-down Jahurul Haq (15) also departed shortly before opener Javed along with Shakib took the side to the verge of win, adding 71 runs for the third wicket. Javed was just three short of a half-century when he was stumped off an Omar Faruque delivery. Gritty Javed consumed 108 balls and clubbed six fours in his 47-run knock. Shakib smashed 51 off 46 balls with four fours and three sixes to take the side home. Earlier, put in to bat first, Partex's batsmen struggled to find their feet as pacer Mahbubul Alam Robin ran through the top order to return four for 24. Pakistani middle-order batsman Rashid Hanif topscored with 33 off 77 balls. Abahani vs Pegasus Pace duo Mashrafee (4/25) and Subhashis Roy (3/16) shared seven wickets as Young Pegasus slumped to 106 all out in 36.2 overs, chasing Abahani's paltry 175 all out in 47.2 overs. After being bundled out for 105 against Gazi Tanks in their previous match, Abahani batsmen again failed, with Indian Venu Gopal Rao scoring highest 37 runs. Captain Mashrafee, batting at number eight, played a 29-ball 24 before Abahani collapsed to 175 all out, raising the spectre of another defeat. Pacemen Mashrafee and Subhashis, however, made things difficult for Pegasus, who having been reduced to 44 for five never recovered. Ruvin Peiris stuck to the crease make 37 off 77 balls, but he hardly got any support from other Pegasus players. MSC vs Victoria Asked to bat first, Mohammedan made 242 for seven in 50 overs, thanks to fifties from opener Nasiruddin Faruque and middle-order batsmen Pankaj Joshi and Faisal Hossain Dickens. Faruque and Pankaj took Mohammedan to 138 for four from a precarious 33 for three before Faruque was trapped leg before by Pakistani Akil Arshad for 61 off 96 balls. Afterwards, Pankaj pairing with Faisal added 96 runs for the fifth wicket, but Pankaj fell short of the crease, leaving the side at 134 for five in 48 overs. Mohammedan captain Suhrawardi Shuvo broke the stand, trapping Aziz leg before for 50 off 73 balls that included five fours and one six. Arman and Akil, however, kept things under control to propel their side o 244 for two in 43.2 overs, giving Victoria their first win in three matches. Dreams of women's Tri-nation finals dashed

Dhaka, Feb 14 (worldsport7.blogspot.com) – Bangladesh's dreams of making it to the Women's Cricket Tri-Nation Series final were dashed on Saturday when the hosts conceded a massive nine-wicket defeat to Pakistan in their last group match. Pakistan, who had earlier beaten Bangladesh, became group runners-up to set the final clash against group champions Sri Lanka. The final will take place on Feb. 17 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Bangladesh, who raised their final hopes after thrashing Sri Lanka by six wickets on Friday, miserably failed to live up to their performance against Pakistan at Birsreshthha Shaheed Motiur Rahman Stadium in Khulna. They were skittled out for a paltry 94 all out in 34.4 overs after being asked to bat first. Ayesha Akter and captain Salma Khatun were only two batswomen to touch the double digits in the face of some tight bowling from Nadia (3/23) and Sania Khan (2/12), who together grabbed five wickets. Ayesha topscored with 21, followed by Salma with 18. In reply, Pakistan reached 96 for one in 20.1 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 41-run knock from opener Bismah Mahroof. Quanita chipped in with 24 runs.
